Origami, Opus 291
Kiln formed glass and metals, 2003.
Frame 38" high by 68" wide. Two glass panels, irregular dimensions.

Origami is a double panel rendition of the mighty beetle (insect family; Coleoptera) as a highly allegorical reference to Icarus, son of Daedelus. In the Greek myth Icarus, equipped with a pair of wings built by his father, flies too close to the sun and as his feather and wax wings melt, plunges down to his demise. These Beetles are not experiencing any difficulty flying here, but they do prefer to flit about mostly at night. The title is suggested by the many folds and wrinkles in the transparent wings.
