Amber Frond Fractal, Opus 137, 1999
Glass panel, 11 by 33 inches.Frame, 13 by 36 inches.
Amber Frond Fractal was completed after Roger took a class in the "Australian roll-up" technique of glass blowing. In the class they had been discussing what made fused glass look different from blown glass, and he developed a series of abstracts based on cutting up and reassembling some earlier completed works. After the class he continued with this work in his traditional flat format.
For him, the most refreshing thing about this tile-fitting technique is that the finished construction transforms less upon fusing, so that what comes out looks more like what he put in the kiln. Fewer surprises, more control.
